Past & History

Part1 (1/7)
Do you like to learn about history?
Yes, I enjoy learning about what happened in the past. I am particularly interested in studying the Koryo Dynasty from 918 to 1392 because, in this period, gender equality was better than it is now in some respects.
Part1 (2/7)
Do you think history is important?
Sure, it is important to remember events that took place throughout history. We can learn from the tragedies that happened in the past.
Part1 (3/7)
Do you like to watch programs on TV about history?
Yes, I love to watch historical dramas on TV. I am particularly interested in programs or documentaries about ancient times rather than more recent history.
Part1 (4/7)
Do you think you can really learn history from films and TV programs?
Absolutely, films and TV programs make learning about history more entertaining than studying it from a textbook. But we need to bear in mind that there might be some fictional aspects to their accounts.
Part1 (5/7)
Do you think the Internet is a good place to learn about history?
The Internet can be a decent place to learn about history with just a few clicks of a mouse. But the problem with the Internet is that not all the information we find is factual and correct.
Part1 (6/7)
Can you name a person from history who you would like to learn more about?
Ever since watching 'The Imitation Game', I have become interested in Alan Turing's life and work. He was a British pioneering computer scientist, mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and theoretical biologist.
Part1 (7/7)
Why would you like to learn more about him/her?
Although Turing is the father of artificial intelligence and he even shortened the duration of the Second World War, his work has hidden for a while. I would like to know whether there was a deliberate conspiracy by the British government.

Part2
Describe an important historical event.
what this event is/ when it happened and what happened/ who the most important people involved were/ and say why you think it was important
Now, I would like to talk about a memorable moment in history.
The event which I've chosen is the 'Gwangju Uprising'. Although it only happened a few decades ago, it is referred to as a symbol of South Korea's struggle for democracy.
The uprising took place in 1980 and broke out in Gwangju, which was then the capital of South Jeolla Province. It was a response to a military coup d'etat carried out by General Chun Doo-hwan, who went on to become president. Chun had overthrown the previous leader by force, so citizens were calling for him to resign.
Thousands of civilians were killed or injured by the armed forces during those difficult times, while others simply went missing. Years later, President Chun issued a public apology and went to live in isolation at a temple in Gangwon Province called Baekdamsa.
The Gwangju Uprising laid the foundations for South Korea to become a democratic country. There is now a memorial in Gwangju for all those who died for the sake of freedom.
That's all from me, thank you very much for your attention!

Part3 (1/4)
What do you think we can learn by studying events of the past?
We can learn from the trials and errors made by leaders of communities in the past. If we do not study history and make sure that it is remembered, then we are doomed to repeat old mistakes. An accurate understanding of history not only helps to save us from further tragic events but also allows humanity to prosper in the present and future.
Part3 (2/4)
What important events do you think might take place in the future?
Although it is difficult to predict what important events might take place in the future, if I were to guess, I think there will be more advances in the field of medicine. Scientists are currently doing a lot of research into so many different fatal diseases like leukemia that affect many people but are not yet curable. It is only a matter of time before important cures are found that will save millions of lives.
Part3 (3/4)
Are museums in your country popular with people of all ages? Why do you think that is? In your opinion, what could be done to make them more popular?
Museums are not very popular with teenagers in Korea. They tend to go to museums if it is on a school field trip. I don't think that they would choose to go there out of choice because they think it is boring. If museums were made more interactive and encouraged children to take a more hands-on approach to learning, museums would be more popular.
Part4 (4/4)
What do you think is the best way to make history interesting and accessible for children?
Perhaps the best way to ensure that history is more accessible to children is to make it fun so that they can engage with it. As kids love to get first-hand experience, organising trips to historical theme parks with actors dressed as famous figures who the children could talk would bring the past to life. General Yi Sun-sin and the Great Queen Seondeok would be popular.
